Meet Sandy and Dave...
Like a number of farmers drawn to what is often referred to as the "local food movement," we were not born into farming families. In fact, we left our full-time "office" careers in our 40's to pursue this physically demanding yet rewarding vocation. We became owners of our farm in 2004 and have offered a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program since 1995. Inspired by the new CSA farming model, which had made its way to the U.S. only about 10 years earlier, we followed the example of some local CSA mentors and put our love for growing food and interest in fostering true community spirit to task.
We work to provide the freshest, highest quality fruits and vegetables, educate members and nonmembers on sustainable food and energy issues, and illustrate the importance of community in our food system. We are motivated by this commitment and the opportunity to make the world just a little better.
Snuggled into the southeast corner of Milwaukee County, we only use organic methods to grow produce in a bio-sustaining way; we preserve natural areas to promote and enhance the biodiversity of the farm; and we minimize the use of tractors. We also better utilize a common resource, the sun. The sun not only helps grow our crops, it also produces our electricity. As this 2011 Bayview Compass article hopefully conveys, we feel all these efforts are better for the food we produce and the community within which we produce it.
